Curacao forms along with Aruba and Bonaire the ABC islands of the Netherlands Antilles. Curacao is the biggest island of the 3 and is located in the South of the Caribbean territory, only 50 kilometer from the coast of Venezuela. Curacao is about 444 square kilometers. The length of the island is 61 km and the width varies from 5 to 14 km. The sun shines almost 365 days per year with a warm tropical temperature.

The capital of Curacao is Willemstad and it is divided in Punda and Otrabanda. Both sides of the town are connected by the floating “Pontoon” bridge, unique of it’s kind in the world. Willemstad was founded after the Dutch captured the island in 1634. The Dutch influence is seen in the architectures of the buildings along the water fronts of Punda and Otrobanda. It is a piece of the Netherlands in the tropics.

The official language is Dutch. Papiamentu is the native language of the ABC islands It is a mix languages that got its main influence from African, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, English and French. It was born during the time of slavery around the 17th century when Curacao was a plantation colony. This mixture of languages made it possible for the slaves to communicate with the plantation owners and among themselves. The island has a tropical climate which is cooled off with a fresh and constant wind coming from the Northeast. There is plenty of sun all year and not much rain. The average temperature during the day is 27,5°C and there is almost no difference through the entire year, only 2°C. At night the temperature can drop about 5°C. There is a rainy season and a dry season, Mid-October, November and December form the rainy season, followed by the coolest months January and February. The warmest months are August, September and the beginning of October. Sea water temperature is around 27°C .
